Art Deco is one of the rare forms of design that swept over the world almost upon its creation. This was a remarkable feat considering that the first deco inspired designs were created almost one hundred years ago! Deco began in the Nineteen Twenties in France. Its lavish and decadent design was a sharp and welcome contrast to the spartan and horrific environment that the first World War had just left behind. In America our deco period began in the late nineteen twenties and ran until the second World War. The beginning years for American Deco were lavish and decadent much like the Europeans. However, in America the style tended to stay more geometric with heavy use of nickels and chrome throughout the piece. Great buildings like the Empire State and Chrysler buildings were created during this time and still stand to this day as some of the greatest skyscrapers ever created.
