Five stones used in Native American jewelry.

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What comes to mind when we think about Native American, and specifically Southwest, jewelry? Turquoise, of course, but Native American jewelry, usually created in sterling silver, makes liberal use of many kinds of natural stones. We're going to look at 5 of the most popular.

1. Turquoise
Of the many gemstones used in Native American jewelry, turquoise remains the favorite. The gorgeous sky blue, robin's egg blue, light and dark turquoise and even green colors evoke the Desert sky and come from deposits in Arizona, California, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah. Natural turquoise can be solid in color, or be combined with brown, gold, white, and other colored minerals. The bluer colors of turquoise come from association with copper, and the greener shades from iron. There is a vast variety of colors and mineral mixes, something for every taste.

2. Coral
Also called Red Coral or Red Branch Coral, the intense red color complements turquoise and other colored stones. Made from collections of hundreds of tiny animals growing on the sea bottom, red coral was originally found mainly in the Mediterranean Sea. Pink coral comes from the Pacific Ocean.
How did coral make its way to the American Southwest and become an integral feature of Native American jewelry? We'll leave that mystery for another time.

3. Lapis Lazuli
Deep blue, often with gold flecks, lapis is one of the few rocks that is used as a gem for jewelry. Many ancient cultures believed that lapis lazuli had magical powers. Today, you'll see brilliant blue lapis with Sterling Silver. Lapis is easily scratched, and should be cleaned only with a soft, dry cloth. Denim Lapis is a lighter bluish-white form of lapis lazuli. Some Lapis Lazuli comes from Afghanistan

4. Onyx
The typical onyx stone is black as night, and polished to a high shine. When mined, it may have bands of white, black, brown or red. Treatments of heat, sugar and/or acid can turn onyx a uniform black color. It's used mainly in settings, as it may chip or scratch easily, and not for carving or inlay work.

5. Malachite
Light to rich dark green, malachite sometimes had bands of darker and lighter shades of green. The bands may form concentric rings. Polished, banded malachite is worn as jewelry and is carved into ornaments and figures. It's often found with blue Azurite, and sometimes the two colors mix or band together, forming "Fa - malachite, malachite jewelry, often used in African American native

Great American Artworks Click on the photo of each color below to view a larger picture and pricing. These excellent pastels are handmade in the United States. Their creator proudly calls them "The Best Pastels on the Planet." They have a wonderfully smooth texture that falls between Unison and Diane Townsend soft pastels. Like Diane's pastels colors may vary slightly due to the fact that they are mixed by hand. Colors are available in 6 or 7 dilution strengths from a pure masstone to a very light tint. There is a unique selection of middle tones that are perfect for both portrait and landscape work. Each color family has been given a distinctive name such as Chlorophyl (bright green) Dragonsblood (burgundy) and Neptune (deep blue). Great American Pastels are extremely brittle and delicate. Design Art Deco.

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Art Deco is one of the rare forms of design that swept over the world almost upon its creation. This was a remarkable feat considering that the first deco inspired designs were created almost one hundred years ago! Perhaps even more intriguing is that even today it continues to inspire modern artist, architects, and advertising.

Deco began in the Nineteen Twenties in France. Its lavish and decadent design was a sharp and welcome contrast to the spartan and horrific environment that the first World War had just left behind. This generation was looking forward to peace and the everyday joys of life. Truly it was a time of celebration and it was reflected in every piece of art deco design. This reflection was so great that much of the world was inspired by the French Art Deco of the time. It was only a matter of a few years before it became a part of American life.

In America our deco period began in the late nineteen twenties and ran until the second World War. The beginning years for American Deco were lavish and decadent much like the Europeans. However, in America the style tended to stay more geometric with heavy use of nickels and chrome throughout the piece. Great buildings like the Empire State and Chrysler buildings were created during this time and still stand to this day as some of the greatest skyscrapers ever created.

Using deco designs in your home will create a feeling of genuine luxury. Using a few Abstract pieces of art deco with traditional to create a sense of genuine contemporary For those who want to feel for Americana Ancient pieces or one model will work great.

Art Norman Rockwell print.

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Norman Rockwell is revered as one of the great American artists of the 20th century. His distinctive style and unique choice of subjects were appreciated in his day as well as decades after his death. By 1916, he had created his first of many Saturday Evening Post covers - three hundred and seventeen in all. By the early 1920s, his work for magazines was growing in popularity and bringing in numerous requests. In 1920, he made a painting for the Boy Scouts of America calendar, a project he supported until just before his death. Today, Norman Rockwell art prints are in high demand.

Life in Arlington

Rockwell lived in Arlington from 1939 to 1953, one of the most important and acclaimed periods in his career. It was an era of rapid post-war growth and significant world change; Norman Rockwell art prints reassured the nation that cherished small-town values would not disappear. During those 14 years, he produced some of his most famous paintings, including, Saying Grace, The Gossips, Christmas Homecoming, Girl at Mirror, the Four Freedoms, Breaking Home Ties, and Rosie the Riveter.

Four Freedoms Series

In 1942, Rockwell painted one his most overtly political and important pieces. In response to a speech given by President Franklin Roosevelt, the artist created a series entitled the Four Freedoms. Throughout the mid-1940s, these paintings traveled around the country in an effort to help raise funds for the war through the sale of bonds. Viewed by more than a million people, their popularity was considered a representation of the war effort at home. During the late 1940s and 1950s, Rockwell maintained his reputation as one of the most prolific and recognized illustrators in the country.

Breaking Home Ties

Rockwell painted Breaking Home Ties for the September 25, 1954 cover of the Saturday Evening Post. It depicts a boy from a ranch in New Mexico who is about to leave home for the first time. His youthful optimism is contrasted with the serious look of his father as they sit on the running board of an old truck. Though the two figures are not looking at each other, the sense of family ties is very powerful in the iconic 1954 picture. It is one of Rockwell's most popular and most often reproduced images, and is considered by Rockwell experts to be one of his masterworks. Breaking Home Ties has been included in a number of national and international exhibitions since 1955. For the first time in decades, the painting was put on view in 2003 at the Norman Rockwell Museum.

Rosie the Riveter

In 1942, a popular song about a patriotic female defense worker called Rosie the Riveter served as the inspiration for a new kind of American woman. Norman Rockwell painted Rosie the Riveter for the May 29, 1943, cover of The Saturday Evening Post. Rosie the Riveter represents the six million women who worked in the manufacturing plants that produced munitions and material during World War II while the men were off fighting the war. The painting was originally meant to represent strong American support for the war. Like the Four Freedoms, Rockwell's Rosie the Riveter was taken on a nationwide tour to promote the sale of war bonds during the World War II to help raise funds to support the war effort.

Norman Rockwell art prints have become American cultural icons. They represent simplicity embedded with complex meanings And metaphors. Rockwell is a fantasy artist well ahead of his time. He redefined his art with special techniques and management to preserve American values, while the innovation
